The Story

For Juan Cartagena (Founder) baseball has been his true love since he picked up a wood bat when he was seven years old. This love and dedication from an early age for the game allowed him to develop into a star player throughout his youth, high school and college playing career. Though his ambition was to be able to play at the highest level of baseball, his dream would end early and fall short due to arm injuries.

After stepping away from the game for a short period due to the disappointment of falling short, the call of the game was too strong. He still had the ambition of making it to the next level in some form, so he decided to focus on the reason why he was such a great contact hitter throughout the years. It came down to two main reasons, dedicated intensive hitting drills and training with a wood bat.

While dedicated intensive hitting drills are very important to the development of player, hitting with a wood bat allows player to stay ahead of the pack and develop a sound swing that will transition to the next level of play. With this fact mind, Juan decided to research the market and quickly noticed that youth wood play was growing, but was a very expensive proposition due to high prices and lack of quality.

"A Light Turns On"

In 2004 he thought what if he was able to help the game of baseball by creating a high quality, affordable wood bat that is specifically design for each specific age group? Just like every MLB player today requires their own piece of custom lumber to address their body size and specific style of swing, youth players also require a piece of lumber that they physically swing according to their age and size. This is why he decided to create youth bats that are of high quality and specifically designed with the youth players mechanics in mind.

Applying the same type of dedication to his new business that he had in baseball when he played, has led to Mad Dog Bats gaining national attention. Mad Dog Bats over the years has been able to lead a new youth baseball revolution by designing industry leading youth wood bats and changing the way youth players approach the game of baseball.

This success has gained national attention and has helped Juan’s ambition to be involved with the game at the highest level actually start to become a reality. Mad Dog Bats big impact on youth baseball play has begun to turn heads at the upper levels leading to new major opportunities. Mad Dog Bats is now in process of developing bats specifically for MLB players, not only taking the company to the next level, but also making a dream come true for the founder.

Our Bat Philosophy

For instance, we have trained our young players to swing aluminum bats from the first day they pick up a bat. This is the first mistake in training young baseball players today, especially when this is baseballs version of a golfer’s handy cap. Metal bats are very forgiving and really don't teach a player how to swing a bat. This is why many players today have slow bat speeds and are not able to cover the plate effectively.
